PRAISE TO THE LORD WAS ONE OF DR. COOPER'S FAVORITE HYMNS. HE WAS ENAMORED BY THE UPWARD LEAP OF A FIFTH BETWEEN THE 3RD AND 4TH NOTES IN THE BEGINNING MOTIF OF THE MELODY. HE MAINTAINED THAT THE UPWARD LEAP GAVE THE MELODY CHARACTER. FOR HIM, THE CLIMATIC POINT WAS THE FOUR NOTES IN MEASURE 17 WHEN THE CHOIR SINGS IN UNISON "LET THE AMEN" (STANZA ONE). HE PROFFERED THOSE TO BE THE "FOUR STRONGEST NOTES" IN THE LITERATURE OF HYMNS. THEY ARE INDEED MUSICALLY MEANINGFUL!
AS WITH ALL THE SETTINGS OF DR. COOPER'S HYMNS IN THIS CHORAL SERIES, THEY ARE WRITTEN IN MELODY-PART STYLE. ACCESS THE THREE-PART (CLICK HERE) VARIABLE VOICING CHART TO SEE THE OPTIONS THAT ARE AVAILABLE.
