On Independence
Jonathan
Mitchell Sewall (1749-1808) wrote a variety of patriotic poems. Sewall's text for On
Independence captures the essence and
determination of the colonists as they prepare for the American Revolution.
While the composer's intriguing musical style seizes the singers' attention the students will learn a little American history.
One stanza
is set in four parts. The remainder of the work is mostly unison or two
parts.
