PERFORMANCE INSIGHTS
English Street Cry
Throughout the history of almost every
country in the world, vendors can be found hawking their merchandise
in open markets. In some cultures, the hawkers would assign a melody to
their words and sing it over and over. Probably the most prevalent in
modern times are the street cries from 19th century England. This
Kicklighter composition is a combination of different phrases from this particular
street cry amalgamated into a four-part polyphonic presentation. For
clarity, he introduces each phrase separately in a slow tempo which may be sung
by sections or by soloists. The tempo quickens as the phrases are set
against each other. It is unique and easy to learn. This could be a
great piece for a theatrical approach. Begin with soloists or sections in
various areas of the hall. As the singers move throughout the hall, watch the audience smile.
