Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel?
This spiritual was inspired by the
Old Testament story of Daniel in the lions' den. The essence of the
lyrics is that if God could deliver Daniel from the lion's den, then surely God
could deliver every man from the difficulties encountered here on earth (particularly the slaves who were indentured to a life without freedom). Young
singers always enjoy singing African-American spirituals.
This spiritual is particularly socially meaningful and musically accessible to the young adolescent.
This four-part piece was originally
intended to be sung by all-male groups, but it may be sung by mixed groups as
well. Directors with several age groups (grades) of young men combined
will be able to find a part which will best suit the voices of boys moving
through various phases of change. This is the advantage of four-part music
-- the more parts from which to choose, the better. The
Four-Part
Variable Voicing Chart indicates
how to use the piece with different age groups and voicings.
