Carol of the Bells
(click the title to view and hear

The well-known Carol of
the Bells is an endearing Christmas carol that was composed by the
Ukrainian, Mikola Leontovich, and made popular in America by Peter
Wilhousky. The English lyrics for this setting were written by Clarice Knight,
the arranger. The principal characteristic of the piece is the familiar
four-note ostinato found at the opening. The dynamics
are very important to the effectiveness of the carol, beginning
softly and gradually increasing to fortissimo then gradually dying away to the end. This arrangement is most appropriate for early
adolescents (SACB), but it may be sung by adults as SSAB voicing.
